A Bay Area cop believed he was having sexually explicit conversations with an underaged teen via Snapchat, however, he was being catfished with the social media platform's highly controversial gender-swapping filter as part of a sting operation to arrest him. Robert Davies, an officer in San Mateo, CA was apprehended on last Thursday after San Jose police enlisted the help of a college student to catfish Davies using the filter. The 20-year-old student made a fake Tinder account that he used to communicate with Davies, “but filtered the profile photo to appear as a young[er] girl.” They later switched their communication to Snapchat where they engaged in more sexually explicit conversations.
Police say that it was evident that Davies believed he was speaking to a teen girl during these digital interactions. The investigation is still underway as police have seized Davies electronic devices, and will scour his messages, apps, etc.
