The boxing world lost a legend as former champion Pernell Whitaker was killed after being struck by a car on Sunday night in Virginia Beach. Police and emergency medical personnel responded to the call around 10:04 PM. When they arrived, Whitaker was in bad shape and later succumbed to the injuries he sustained.
Pernell "Sweat Pea" Whitaker took boxing by storm in the early '80s until his retirement in 2001. He boasted a record of 40-4-1 which included 17 knockouts. Whitaker was a decorated amateur as well, winning the gold medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
