The new partnership deal between JAY-Z (and Roc Nation) and the NFL has got a lot of people opining about Hov not involving Colin Kaepernick in the partnership. Jay held a joint press conference with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to officially announce the partnership. During the presser, Hov fielded questions about Kaepernick and explained his rationale behind partnering with "The Shield."
"I think that we forget that Colin's whole thing was to bring attention to social injustice," Hov said on Wednesday about Kaepernick's highly publicized and polarizing national anthem protests. "In that case, this is a success. This is the next thing because there’s two parts of the protest." Jay explained that Kaepernick's initial decision to take a stand and drum up attention around the cause was step one. But added that this new deal would constitute the second phase. "Everyone heard and we hear what you're saying and everybody knows I agree with what you're saying, so what are we gonna do?" said Jay.
When asked about Kaepernick's potential involvement in the new partnership, Jay remarked, "You'll have to ask him... I'm not his boss. I can't just bring him into something. That's for him to say." He lauded Kaepernick for continuing his activism despite not playing football and said it was Kaepernick's version of an "action item." Hov stated, "That's his version of an action item, this is our version of an action item," adding, "We all do different things. We all work differently for the same results. I don't knock what he's doing, and hopefully he doesn't knock what I'm doing."
