The risk of coronavirus has risen in spaces that include prison, with many prisoners and those jailed looking to get out early to avoid catching COVID-19. Folks like R. Kelly tried their hand at getting out to no avail, while Tekashi 6ix9ine was able to get an early prison release and serve the rest of his sentence at home. News surfaced that Bill Cosby tried his hand at securing a temporary prison release, but was not eligible.
Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf issued an executive order that would let prisoners out to reduce the spread of coronavirus. The prison Cosby is currently in—the State Correctional Institution at Phoenix has about 20 coronavirus cases according to reports. Days ago, SCI Phoenix reportedly experienced their first death related to the coronavirus, which resulted in nine inmates being released. However, Bill Cosby was not included in that batch.
Kate Delano of the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office spoke on the matter, saying, “Mr. Cosby is not eligible for release under Gov. Wolf’s order since he was convicted of a violent offense (aggravated indecent assault) and was deemed a Sexually Violent Predator. So for both of those reasons, he would not be eligible to be released.”
Cosby’s publicist Andrew Wyatt issued a statement saying, “our legal team will not be filing a petition until we see how Governor Wolf’s executive order will be implemented.”
