The president fielded questions on Monday and got into a heated exchange with a CBS reporter. Trump characterized CBS News reporter Weijia Jiang's question about his insistence on framing each country's response to the coronavirus in terms of competition as a "nasty question."

"Why is this a global competition when, every day, Americans are still losing their lives?" asked Jiang. "They're losing their lives everywhere in the world," said Trump in response. "And maybe that's a question you should ask China. Don't ask me, ask China that question, OK?"

The latter half of Trump's response sparked controversy and invited calls of racism as his dig at China came at the expense of an Asian-American reporter who describes herself as a "Chinese-born West Virginian." Jiang shot back, "Sir, why are you saying that to me specifically?" "I'm saying it to anybody who would ask a nasty question like that," said Trump. "It’s not a nasty question," Jiang replied, adding,  "Why does that matter?"
