Recently, Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina spoke to news outlet France 24 and took the time to defend the promotion of a homegrown COVID-19 herbal drink called Covid-Organics. The herbal drink hasn’t undergone any clinical trials, but still has the support of the president.

During the interview, Rajoelina said the herbal drink “works really well,” but the World Health Organization has rallied continuously against the president’s claims, pointing out the fact that the remedy hasn’t been tested. Rajoelina went on to say, “What if this remedy had been discovered by a European country, instead of Madagascar? Would people doubt it so much? I don't think so.”  Rajoelina noted the herbal drink allegedly cures patients within 10 days.

He then continued to say, “What is the problem with Covid-Organics, really? Could it be that this product comes from Africa? Could it be that it's not OK for a country like Madagascar, which is the 63rd poorest country in the world... to have come up with (this formula) that can help save the world?”

Since that interview took place, Madagascar has reported their first death due to COVID-19, as a 57-year-old hospital worker reportedly passed away from the virus.
