According to reports, former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is set to be released from federal prison early, which more than likely may be due to COVID-19 concerns.

Previously, Kilpatrick was sentenced to 28 years in prison after being convicted for 24 felony counts of public corruption for a criminal racket involving fraud, bribery, extortion, and conspiracy. Kilpatrick was not up for parole until 2037, but now, he is being released from prison.

Reports surfaced that an inmate located in the prison where Kilpatrick was being held in Oakdale, Louisiana died from contracting COVID-19. Current Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan reportedly gave support for the release of Kilpatrick, while Michigan state representative Sherry Gay-Dagnogo asked Donald Trump for clemency for Kilpatrick in the form of a letter.
