Trump’s HUD Secretary Ben Carson recently made an appearance on CNN and was asked about Trump retweeting a video that found conservatives talking about George Floyd’s past drug use and things to try and bring down the 46-year-old’s character, amongst other things. Protesters began to gather in many cities for demonstrations across the nation after footage of Floyd’s death by ex-police officer Derek Chauvin began to spread across the world. Because of that, tensions between protesters and police have turned up, causing riots at many of the demonstrations. While speaking on one of the groups that have been organizing protests—Black Lives Matter, Carson said the group should shift their focus to Chicago and become concerned about black men getting killed in the streets of Chicago.

Carson said, “As far as Black Lives Matter is concerned, I hope that maybe this is the beginning of being concerned about the many young black men who will be killed in Chicago this weekend.” This is the same narrative that Donald Trump previously used when he called the city a “total disaster” and compared Chicago to Afghanistan. Carson continued saying, “We need to be just as concerned as them as we are about anybody else. Until we begin to manifest that kind of concern, I don’t think we are quite where we need to be yet.”
