Temecula, California mayor James Stewart recently resigned from his position after his response to a constituent about police brutality sparked a massive backlash.
The former mayor reportedly wrote, “[I don’t] believe there’s ever been a good person of color killed by a police officer.” This was in response to Temecula’s handling of police brutality.
Stewart issued a statement on the matter via his resignation announcement on Facebook, saying, “City of Temecula, I hear you, I agree with you, and I am deeply sorry. I owe everyone an apology, including our citizens of all backgrounds and ethnicities, city staff, and my respected colleagues on the City Council.”
Stewart then went on to blame the statement he made on typos and a misinterpreted voice text response to an email he was speaking. Stewart said he doesn’t know how the word “good” got into his message and also said, “ I’m very well known for my dyslexia, so I voice text everything,” and continued saying he “did not take the time to proofread what was recorded.” He concluded his statement by saying, “I understand that even my sincerest apologies cannot remedy this situation. Because actions speak louder than words, I will step down as your Mayor and City Council Member effective immediately.”
