Carlos Lehder, who worked alongside Pablo Escobar and co-founded the Medellín Cartel, was freed from prison at 70-years-old. Lehder was known for using Norman's Cay, a private island in the Bahamas, as a base for their drug-smuggling operation.
After being captured in Colombia in 1987, Lehder was extradited to the US and sentenced to life plus 135 years in jail, which was reduced to 55 years after he agreed to testify against former Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega.
Upon his release, German authorities provided assistance in allowing him to resettle in Berlin after he was given German citizenship through his father, an immigrant to Colombia. Lehder's daughter, Mónica, revealed that Carlos has cancer and will be cared for by a German charity. He reportedly has no family in the country.
