Despite being an Ohio native, LeBron James is a longtime Dallas Cowboys fan, so seeing his team's conference rival, formerly known as the Washington Redskins, struggle to settle on a name change was an opportunity to thumb his nose at Washington football fans.
“Just waking back up from my pregame nap to see about The Washington Football Team??? (crying laughing emojis),” LeBron tweeted on Thursday. “Is that real?? No Way! Oh man they had a thorough intense long board meeting about that one huh.” DMV native and Nets forward Kevin Durant responded to LeBron's tweet with a GIF of an eye roll, to which LeBron shot back, “Yo I was going to check on you but figured you didn’t wanna be bothered at the moment.”
The Washington franchise decided on the "Washington Football Team" as a placeholder for the 2020 season. “Effective immediately, Washington will call itself the ‘Washington Football Team,’ pending adoption of a new name,” tweeted ESPN's Adam Schefter on Thursday. “This is not a final renaming and rebranding for the team, this is the name it wants to use until pending adoption of a new name in the future.”
