A video of female NYPD officers smoking hookah out of their squad car has been making the round on social media. The footage shows the officers casually standing around the police car while taking drags off of the hookah pipe.
This comes amid widespread criticism of the NYPD amid ongoing protests and unrest in the city. Mayor Bill de Blasio revealed that "the future is going to involve a lot more reform" when referring to the police department and announced that the NYPD would be getting a $1 billion cut in the 2020-21 fiscal year.
Governor Andrew Cuomo questioned the cut, stating, "We are taking a billion dollars out of the NYPD budget, I don’t know what it means. Does it mean I am less safe? Where did you take the billion dollars from? Does it mean I’m more safe? Does it have any effect on police abuse? I don’t know what it means." Cuomo suggested that the department redesign itself to remedy the relationship between communities and officers.
