Update 08/03/2020 4:09pm:
Two weeks after a shooting attack that resulted in the death of her 20-year-old son and left her husband wounded, U.S. District Judge Esther Salas has released a video statement addressing the attack.
Salas called for greater protections for judges and their families. While similar attacks on judges are rare, a report released this year by the U.S. Marshals Service showed "threats and inappropriate comments" against federal court workers increased fourfold since 2015.
"We are living every parent's worst nightmare," Salas said. "Making preparations to bury our only child, Daniel. My family has experienced a pain that no one should ever have to endure. I am here asking everyone to help me ensure that no one ever has to experience this kind of pain. We may not be able to stop something like from happening again but we can make it hard for those who target us to track us down."
The prime suspect, Roy Den Hollander, was a self-described "anti-feminist" and was angered over Salas' handling of a court case. According to the FBI, was targeting other female judges. Hollander died of what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound following the attack on Salas' family.
"As federal judges, we understand that our decisions will be scrutinized and some may disagree strongly with our rulings," Salas said. "We know that our job requires us to make tough calls and sometimes those calls can leave people angry and upset. That comes with the territory and we accept that. But what we can't accept is when we are forced to live in fear for our lives because personal information like our home addresses can easily be obtained by anyone seeking to do us or our families harm."

A hitman dressed as a FedEx worker shot and killed Daniel Anderl, the 20-year-old son of Judge Esther Salas, who recently took over a lawsuit involving investors suing Deutsche Bank over its involvement in the handling of financial matters related to sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein. Salas' husband, Mark Anderl, was also wounded in the attack at their New Jersey home and is expected to survive.
A deceased lawyer is a prime suspect in the case, and according to multiple reports, he was found dead shortly after the incident. The lawyer was found with a package addressed to the judge, and it was revealed that he previously had a case before the judge.
