According to BuzzFeed News, China has erected dozens of new prison camps to house its minority Muslim population. Since 2017, China has built 260 of these internment facilities. BuzzFeed News obtained satellite images showing the vast stretch of land where the camps were built.
The outlet ominously reports, "the construction of these purpose-built, high-security camps — some capable of housing tens of thousands of people — signals a radical shift away from the country’s previous makeshift use of public buildings, like schools and retirement homes, to a vast and permanent infrastructure for mass detention."
The construction of the facilities progresses the Chinese government's reported plans of the mass detention of minority Muslim populations which began in 2016. The detainment of hundreds of thousands of Uighurs, Kazakhs, and other Muslim minorities has become the largest-scale detention of ethnic/religious minorities since World War II.
The report also states that the "Chinese government doesn’t include the internment camps as part of the criminal justice system so the detainees have never been formally charged or arrested for a crime."
