According to reports, an Arkansas man received two life sentences totaling 835 years in prison for killing an off-duty police officer. Demarcus Donnell Parker, 27, was convicted of first-degree murder, illegally shooting a weapon from a vehicle, and 21 related charges in connection with the April 2018 shooting that killed 25-year-old Forrest City police officer Oliver Johnson.
Investigators say Parker was shooting at a rival gang member outside Johnson's home when the officer was struck by a stray bullet. Following sentencing, Second Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ellington said:
“Deputy Prosecutors Tom Young and Mike Snell worked diligently for several weeks to evaluate hundreds of pieces of evidence to make their best case. West Memphis Detectives spent many hours putting the case file together. The jury listened to both sides, and ultimately returned maximum sentences on all counts and recommended they be run consecutively. Sadly, none of this will bring Officer Johnson back to his family, but maybe they will find some comfort that justice was served this week.”
