Tory Lanez was heavily criticized for Daystar's rollout. Many were upset that Tory Lanez teased he was going to speak on the shooting incident with Megan Thee Stallion when he announced on Twitter, "To my fans ... I’m sorry for my silence .... but respectfully .. I got time today ...... 9 PM PST."

Assuming the rapper was going to provide an official statement, many were shocked and accused Lanez of using the incident for profit. Critics also felt like the release date was in poor taste since it had recently been announced that the officers in the Breonna Taylor case would not face murder charges.

Responding to criticism regarding the project's release, Lanez took to Instagram to explain that the release date is the day that his mother passed away.

"9/25 my mothers birthday , the day she passed away , the day the album dropped #daystar," his caption read.

Throughout Daystar, Tory Lanez addressed the shooting and responded to various critics who spoke out against him after being accused of shooting Megan Thee Stallion.
