According to reports, Harlem street legend Dr. Guy Fisher has been released from prison after serving 30 years. Fisher was a prominent drug dealer in Harlem and part of the organized crime syndicate, "The Council," alongside Nicky Barnes. The Council dominated the heroin trade in Harlem during the mid-1970s into the early 1980s. During that time, Fisher's wealth afforded him the ability to purchase the storied Apollo Theater in 1977, making him the first black owner of the space.
In 1984, Fisher was convicted on several counts of RICO violations, including continuing criminal conspiracy, drug trafficking, and murder. Fisher, along with other associates of The Council, had their fates sealed after Barnes testified against his former friend, who he claims was having an affair with his mistress.
While in prison, Fisher received his Master's degree and Ph.D. in Sociology and has written several novels and screenplays. Fisher was released from federal prison on October 28 after being granted a medical pardon.
