According to the New Yorker, Kim Jong Un’s nephew, Kim Han-sol, 25, was taken to an undisclosed location by the CIA. The report added that Han-sol sought the help of a Free Joseon, a group of "freedom fighters" aiming to bring down Un’s "evil" North Korean dictatorship just days after his father was assassinated at a crowded airport terminal in Kuala Lumpur in 2017.

Han-sol was considered by many to be the rightful heir of former North Korean leader his grandfather Kim Jong Il. Free Joseon told the New Yorker that capturing Han-sol "dead or alive" would be a "zero-sum game."

It was reported that Free Joseon arranged a flight to the Netherlands for Han-sol, his mother and teenage sister, which is when two men who identified themselves as CIA officers stepped in and insisted on traveling with them. However, they reportedly never made it to the Netherlands. The last known sighting of Han-sol came from a short video of him thanking Free Joseon before boarding his flight.

The CIA refused to comment to the New Yorker, but a former CIA officer and a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies stated, "I assume [Free Joseon] lost Han-sol to the CIA."
