The Brooklyn Nets and their star guard Kyrie Irving were each fined $25,000 for violating the league's media policy following Irving's refusal to speak with reporters and, instead, providing a prepared statement via social media. In response to the fine, Irving took to social media again and offered up some choice words for the league's front off and the media.
Irving indicated that he hopes the money from the fine is used for “marginalized communities in need.” He also said, “Stop distracting me and my team and appreciate the art. We move different over here.” Irving concluded his statement with, "I do not talk to Pawns. My attention is worth more."
The statement obviously isn't sitting well with many in the media space, but the message didn't sit well among his fellow players either. Kyrie's former teammate Kevin Love pushed back on the remark, saying, “Calling anybody a pawn is a sure sign of disrespect." Love added, “I’m not a divisive person.”
