Donald Trump pardoned and commuted the sentences of 143 people, including Chris Young, who was sentenced to life in prison at 22 under Tennessee's 3-strikes rule.

Kim Kardashian advocated for Young during a September 2018 visit to the White House, in her continued fight for criminal justice reform. Kardashian was successful in lobbying President Trump to free Alice Marie Johnson, who, like Young, was jailed on nonviolent offenses. TMZ revealed that Alice was also involved in helping Chris, as they share the same attorney, Brittany Barnett.

The White House commented on Young's sentence being commuted, stating, "Mr. Young has made productive use of his time in prison by taking courses and learning coding skills. He also has maintained a spotless disciplinary record. Mr. Young’s many supporters describe him as an intelligent, positive person who takes full responsibility for his actions and who lacked a meaningful first chance in life due to what another federal judge called an 'undeniably tragic childhood.'"
