According to reports, Anthony Sowell, better known as the "Cleveland Strangler," died in prison of natural causes at 61.

Sowell earned his moniker from the "gruesome and depraved" nature of his crimes. The first known victims of Sowell's were recovered on October 29, 2009. He reportedly had the 11 decomposed corpses on his Cleveland-area property. Further excavation uncovered an additional 10 women. Sowell's list soon ballooned to 81 victims.

He was convicted for the murders spanning from June 2007 to September 2009. Investigators say that after Sowell murdered his victims, he would keep them in his home and live among the rotten corpses. Authorities found bodies throughout Sowell's home in upstairs bedrooms, the living room, and crawl space. He dug shallow graves in the backyard and basement, where bodies were also found.

While the prison did not specify what Sowell's cause of death was, they did say that it was not from COVID-19.
