According to reports, the headmaster of a Long Island Catholic school made an 11-year-old Black student kneel before him and issue an apology.

An English teacher at St. Martin de Porres Marianist school allegedly saw a 6th grader named Trayson Paul working on the English assignment during class. Because of this, the teacher sent the student to the headmaster’s office.

According to Trisha Paul, Trayson’s mother, the headmaster humiliated her son and fears he was punished more harshly due to his race. The headmaster—John Holian, allegedly told the student to get on his knees and admit to the wrong he had done. From there, the headmaster reportedly told Trayson Paul to kneel because the father of a Nigerian student at the school said that is the “African way” of issuing an apology.

Since the incident, Trisha Paul has spoken on the matter, saying: “Once he started mentioning this African family, that’s when it just clicked. Like, this is not normal procedure. I felt there was no relevance at all. Is he generalizing that everyone who is Black is African? That’s when I realized something is not right with this situation.”

The headmaster is currently on temporary leave as the school investigates the situation. Stay tuned for more updates.
