The attorney general for the state of Minnesota is now saying that Derek Chauvin should receive a longer sentence than what is being suggested by Minnesota. When giving the reason behind his take, he called out Chauvin’s “particular cruelty” towards George Floyd, resulting in Floyd’s death.

This past week, Minnesota AG Keith Ellison filed documents that asked Judge Cahill to give Chauvin a harsher sentence than what was suggested under state guidelines. Chauvin’s sentencing is set to take place in June 2021, and Chauvin is facing 12.5 years as of now. The maximum amount of years Chauvin could face is up to 40 years.

Ellison reportedly argued that Chauvin deserves more time due to alleged cruelty while having his knee on the neck of Floyd, as he ignored the man’s screams. Chauvin’s sentencing on June 25 comes months before the trials of the other three ex-MPD officers’ involved in the Floyd incident. Their trials begin in August 2021. Stay tuned for more updates.
