Jay-Z has been heralded for his lyricism, mainly the sharp imagery he creates with his words, along with the gracefully witty double entendres he places in most of his verses. While he is championed as a top-tier emcee, the rapper noted there is a song in his catalog that serves as a sore spot—“Big Pimpin’.”
The rapper recently spoke to the Sunday Times in a rare interview where he talked about his legacy along with his family. The rapper said “I'm not beyond ego, right? Hopefully, they speak of me [with] the names of Bob Marley and all the greats. But that's not for me to say.” He continued on saying he’s “most proud of overcoming my circumstances and providing opportunity for people who look like me and who came from the same situation that I've come from."
A part of the legacy that helped him overcome his circumstances was the song “Big Pimpin’” which led his fourth album to hit triple platinum status. When asked what he thought of the song years after its massive success, Hov sang a different tune. The rapper and businessman previously talked about his writing process, and how “Big Pimpin” is the exception to his lyrics that appear to be “really profound” when he reads them on paper.
Jay-Z said “That’s the exception. It was like, I can’t believe I said that. And kept saying it. What kind of animal would say this sort of thing? Reading it is really harsh.”
