It was never planned for Steve Urkel to become the standout character on Family Matters. So much so, that the character's actor didn't mind that he was initially shunned by the cast.
In a teaser clip for his upcoming episode of TV One's Uncensored series, Jaleel White revealed that the cast rejected the character and actor that would dominate the classic sitcom.
"I was not welcomed to the cast at all. They know what it was," White said in the clip. "I didn't think anything of it being cast to be on Family Matters because it was supposed to only be a guest spot, one and done."
In the 30-second clip, White also admitted to being caught off-guard by the popularity of Steve Urkel's alter-ego, Stefan Urquelle.
"I was as caught off-guard by the phenomenon of Stefan as anyone. All of America thought I was this way," the actor added.
At the end of the clip, White was seen crying as he spoke about actress Michelle Thomas, who played Urkel's girlfriend Myra Monkhouse. Thomas passed away in 1998 after a battle with stomach cancer.
Jaleel White's Uncensored episode airs Sunday, May 9.
