Recently, Juneteenth was made into a national holiday, but not everyone is on board with the new bill. Reports surfaced noting that Georgia governor Brian Kemp blocked making a Juneteenth a paid holiday for all state employees.

It was noted that Kemp was legally required to sign the Georgia proclamation, which marks June 19 as a national holiday. The news was confirmed by a spokesperson for Kemp, who said the 19th is not going to be a paid holiday for any state employee. Kemp said the reason behind the move is because Georgia state law only allows state public offices to be closed on 12 public and legal holidays, and the limit has been reached.

The U.S. Postal Service spoke on their move for the new holiday, saying they'll continue on their usual schedule of deliveries Friday and Saturday because “it is not possible to cease the operations” on such short notice for an essential service. USPS also said they “will discuss future recognition of this significant new holiday with our national Unions, Management Associations, and other stakeholders, consistent with our collective bargaining and consultative obligations.” Stay tuned for more updates.
