Four officers who responded to the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol have died by suicide. According to NBC News, "Officer Gunther Hashida was found dead at his home Thursday, the Metropolitan Police Department said Monday, and Officer Kyle DeFreytag was found dead July 10."
"We are grieving as a Department as our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Hashida’s family and friends," police said in a statement released Monday. Hashida was assigned to the Police Emergency Response Team and had been part of the force since 2003. DeFreytag was assigned to the Fifth District and had been with the police department since November 2016.
While over 100 D.C. and Capitol police officers were injured during the attack, the latest instances of suicide make four total officers have taken their own lives. Officer Jeffrey Smith, a 12-year-veteran, committed suicide days after the attack and Howard Liebengood, an officer since 2005, killed himself three days after the attack.
