The loss of Aaliyah has still been haunting many fans, and now new details surrounding her 2001 death have surfaced via journalist Kathy Iandoli.
The journalist revealed the new information in her book centered around the star, titled ‘Baby Girl: Better Known as Aaliyah.’ While speaking to The Daily Beast, a man named Kingsley Russell spent time with Aaliyah hours prior to her death, as his family ran a hospitality and taxi business in the Abaco Islands. Russell was only 13 at the time of the singer’s passing and was with Aaliyah as his stepmother drove her and her team to the airport for a flight back to the United States.
Russell noted that he saw Aaliyah refuse to get on the flight and went back to the cab she came in, saying she had a headache. After passing out in the back of the cab, Aaliyah had to be carried onto the plane, which would eventually go down, resulting in the death of eight other people as well. In the book, Russell went on to say, “They took her out of the van; she didn't even know she was getting boarded on a plane. She went on the airplane asleep.”
While speaking to Daily Beast, Iandoli spoke on Aaliyah, saying, “In learning that she did not want to get on the plane, for someone like myself and so many other people, I think that's closure for us. It's an unfortunate closure… but I needed to hear she didn't want to get on that plane; I needed to know that. The person who I thought had the most common sense in the world had common sense to not get on the plane. The fact that she was so adamant, staying in the cab, refusing — these are things we never knew.”
