Mexican boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata passed away Thursday after succumbing to head injuries she sustained during her knockout loss to Marie-Pier Houle in Montreal on August 28th.

The boxing match between Zapata and Houle was stopped at the end of the fourth round before Zapata reportedly began convulsing. The 18-year-old was placed in a medically-induced coma after being rushed to the hospital. However, promoter Groupe Yvon Michel revealed on social media that the female boxer died on Thursday.

"It is with great sadness and torment that we learned, from a representative of her family, that Jeanette Zacarias Zapata passed away this afternoon at 3:45 p.m. The entire team at Groupe Yvon Michel is extremely distressed by this painful announcement," the statement read.

Houle also released a statement after learning about her opponent's death and offered her condolences to Zapata's family.

"Thank you for respecting my desire not to comment more," she said. "The sad news of the departure of a great athlete like Jeanette Zacarias Zapata leaves me sad and devastated. I offer my sincere and deep condolences to her family and husband Jovanni Martinez. May God enlighten your soul and receive it in his glory."

Jeanette Zacarias Zapata reportedly passed away with her husband by her said. Her match against Houle was her sixth professional bout.
