Luxury designer Balenciaga is under fire after social media caught wind of its new "Trompe l'oeil" jogging pants.
The sweatpants are equipped with an attached pair of boxers shorts that give the illusion that the wearer is sagging their pants. Hence the French name Trompe l'oeil, which in English translates to optical illusion or quite literally to "Deceive the eye."
But many call the design racist and claim this is another instance of mainstream culture appropriating elements of ethnic culture. The sweatpants sent Twitter into a frenzy and sparked outrage from users who felt the Spanish luxury brand was "gentrifying" sagging pants at the expense of the Black community, whose members are often criminalized for sagging their pants.
