Former French soccer player Jean-Pierre Adams passed away Monday after spending 39 years in a coma. While undergoing routine knee surgery, in 1982, to repair a damaged tendon, Adams fell into a coma due to an anesthetic error.
After employees at the hospital Adams was being operated on went on strike, the soccer player was looked after by an anesthetist who was still a trainee and had to repeat a year. The trainee had been looking after nearly ten patients in two different rooms and later admitted in court that she "was not up to the task."
Adams remained in a coma for nearly 40 years and was cared for at home by his wife.
The soccer defender was one of the first Black players to play for France. He scored 10 goals in 98 matches for Nimes and 17 goals in 150 games for Nice.
Jean-Pierre Adams was 73 at the time of his passing.
