The drug laws in the United States have been a storied set of rules that have led to the incarceration of numerous people, with a specific focus on people of color. One drug in particular that faces scrutiny despite its popularity is marijuana. Now, numerous celebrities and politicians have come together to ask President Joe Biden for reform on the now medicinal plant.
A document that made its way to the White House this week requested that non-violent cannabis-related offenders all over the country be pardoned for what is perceived to be a crime by law.
The letter addressed how the law currently is against the idea of federalism, with text that says “nearly three-quarters of the states have now abandoned the federal government’s blanket criminal ban in favor of safe, regulated legal access to marijuana for adults and/or those with qualifying medical conditions.” Another idea in the letter calls out the misallocation of the nation’s funds to go after “offenders,” saying “Whatever one thinks of other drugs and other defendants, incarcerating marijuana offenders in federal prisons is a misuse of our nation’s resources and grossly hypocritical.”
The letter addressed to Joe Biden was endorsed by entertainers and athletes like Meek Mill, Drake, Quavo, 2 Chainz, Kodak Black, Ty Dolla $ign, Stephen Jackson, J.R. Smith, John Wall, Julio Jones, Deion Sanders, and more.
