NBA point guard Dennis Schroder reportedly turned down an $84 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, believing he could earn more in free agency. However, free agency came and went without Schroder receiving a big offer. Ultimately, the guard took a $78 million loss by signing a one-year, $5.9 million deal with the Boston Celtics.

Schroder became the subject of various jokes after "fumbling the bag," so much so that he joined in on the jokes. The Celtics' new guard recently appeared at the team's media day and answered questions regarding his approach to free agency. According to Schroder, the Lakers held off on contract negotiations during the season and never presented him with an $84 million offer.

"The Lakers told [me and my agent] we're not talking [about a contract extension] during the season and at the end of the day, I never had that contract in front of me," Schroder claimed.

Schroder remained complimentary of the Lakers organization but reflected on his role with the team. He acknowledged that he didn't fit well with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, and wanted to play somewhere where he could showcase his entire skillset.

"At the end of the day, I feel like for me, personally, I got to be comfortable in the environment I'm in," Schroder continued. "I love the Lakers organization and they did great things, but I think for me, and this is just business, I don't think I fit in 100 percent. You play with LeBron and AD, that's two of the best players in the NBA, and I don't think I gave them everything that I bring to the table."

He added that "money is not everything at all times" before pointing out that his family is taken care of after playing in the NBA for nearly a decade. He pointed out that he signed a four-year, $70 million ($62 million guaranteed) deal with the Atlanta Hawks after his rookie deal expired. At 28 years old, Schroder also highlighted the fact that he has more years ahead of him as a professional basketball player.
