Update 11/11/2021 2:25pm:

The son of NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was sentenced to six months in jail for stabbing a neighbor with a hunting knife last summer.

Adam Abdul-Jabbar stabbed his 60-year-old neighbor in June 2020 over a dispute involving trash cans. The 60-year-old was stabbed in the back of the head, suffered a fractured skull, and nearly died of blood loss.

The 29-year-old pleaded guilty to three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of carrying a dirk or dagger, with sentencing enhancements for inflicting great bodily injury, before receiving his sentence on Tuesday.

After avoiding a nine-year sentence, Adam was also given until Jan. 9 to report to jail so that he can apply for home confinement instead of spending his sentence behind bars. He was also ordered to serve two years of probation. Prosecutors, who were seeking a seven-year sentence, criticized the plea agreement and called it "an absolute miscarriage of justice."

"This slap on the wrist is an absolute miscarriage of justice," said District Attorney Todd Spitzer. "This man nearly bled to death in front of the emergency room doors after being stabbed so violently over and over that his skull was fractured. We believe the complete disregard for human life over a dispute over trashcans is so egregious it warranted prison time."
