Hip Hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa was handed his first loss in a recent sexual assault lawsuit due to his accuser having trouble locating the music artist.
Since launching his lawsuit, John Doe and his lawyers have not been able to track down and formally serve Bambaataa. A process server visited the rapper's last known address in The Bronx, but a woman answered the door and claimed he never lived at the residence.
Because of the lack of response on behalf of Bambaataa and The Zulu Nation, the Hip-Hop pioneer was handed his first loss in the lawsuit. John Doe requested the court's permission to proceed anonymously with the civil suit. After the defendant failed to respond, John Doe's request was granted.
In September, Afrika Bambaataa (whose real name is Lance Taylor) and his Universal Zulu Nation were sued and accused of sex trafficking and prostituting a 12-year-old boy to older men during a four-year span. In the case of John Doe vs. Lance Taylor, the victim allegedly had sex with johns at the Zulu Nation's National Headquarters and Bambaataa's apartment. The victim claims he met Bambaataa in 1991 and became a member of the Zulu Nation security.
John Doe filed his lawsuit under New York's Child Victims Act, which passed in 2019. The law opened a one-time, one-year lookback window for survivors to file civil lawsuits seeking compensation for the sexual abuse they suffered as children.
John Doe is seeking an undetermined amount of damages for "assault and gross negligence, physical injury, severe and permanent emotional distress, mental anguish, depression, and embarrassment."
