The coroner's office in York County, Virginia just released the results of a brain scan that they conducted on Phillip Adams, an ex-NFL player who shot and killed six people before taking his own life in April 2021.

The post-mortem study revealed severe brain damage from violent head trauma. A condition commonly known throughout the sports world as CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) was detected in Adams' brain scan. The manner in which these injuries were sustained was strikingly similar to other former athletes who also killed themselves, such as Junior Seau and Aaron Hernandez.

"We have seen this behavior. We have even seen homicidal behavior in others diagnosed with CTE," said Boston University's Dr. Ann McKee, who conducted the examination on Adams' brain tissue. "It is difficult to say that it alone resulted in these behaviors because usually, it's a complicated issue with many other factors."

McKee added that Adams was suffering from stage two CTE. The condition has four stages, with the fourth being the worst and linked to dementia. According to the family of Phillip Adams, the former NFL defensive back sought mental help from his former employer but ultimately, they denied his request for medical support.
