A 23-year-old woman and former Boston College student has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter after encouraging her 22-year-old boyfriend's suicide.
In 2019, Inyoung You was charged with the crime after her boyfriend, Alexander Urtula committed suicide by jumping off a parking garage near Northeastern University just two hours before his college graduation. Prosecutors claimed You had verbally and physically abused Urtula throughout their 18-month relationship. The prosecution pointed to multiple text messages You sent to Urtula encouraging him to kill himself.
"Do everyone a favor and go f****** kill yourself, you're such a f****** stupid a** worthless s***," read one of her messages.
You initially pleaded not guilty to manslaughter charges before accepting her plea deal. By accepting the deal, You will avoid jail time despite her 30-month sentence. According to the terms, the judge has suspended the sentence for 10 years so You will remain free as long as she complies with the terms of her probation during the next decade.
The former college student has been ordered to enroll in a mental health treatment program, complete 300 hours of community service, and is prohibited from financially profiting off the case.
"This agreement with defense counsel was made in close consultation with the Urtula family," announced Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins. "It is consistent with their desire to seek accountability and closure and to protect the legacy of Alexander, a loving son, brother, and uncle. They believe this is something Alexander would have wanted.’"
