An 11-year-old rapper from Shreveport, Louisiana just dropped a music video for a single that pays tribute to all of his dead friends. That is a sentiment alone that pulls on the heartstrings of many. But if you dive deeper into the lyrical content of "Miss You" by Ray Da Yugin, you will discover that he is native to a state that has the highest murder rate in the country and it's also amongst the most impoverished.
This makes the young musician uniquely qualified to provide insight into what it is like to grow up in an environment where the lives of many are constantly being lost to violence, including the ones who belong to the pre-adolescent demographic.
In fact, "Miss You" was actually inspired by the death of one of his closest friends, Xavier Perry. A 12-year-old who was shot and killed last month.
The rawness of Ray Da Yugin's music video struck an emotional chord within his community and it even prompted a local news station called KLFY to reach out to him for an interview that just aired today.
"If people just put the guns down and stopped the violence, people could do more than what they're already doing," said Ray Da Yungin.
Ray Da Yungin whose real name is Rayvon Webber was joined on the set of the live interview with KLFY by his father and manager, Marquis Jackson.
"We've received so many emails and DM's from the family members of the victims. They're telling us how the song has helped them. So, to be able to make a difference with my son and we're helping each other's dreams come true--it's amazing."
