When Usher was at the very height of his success back in the early 2000s, his fans often pitted him against his award-winning contemporaries like Justin Timberlake and Chris Brown. Usher's 2004 release, Confessions, went on to become one of the best-selling albums of the decade, earning him a diamond plaque from the Recording Industry Association of America and a place amongst Billboard's prestigious "Top 50 R&B/Hip-Hop Artists of the Past 25 Years" list.
But, nearly two decades have passed since Usher's heyday and now that his prime years are behind him, it looks like fellow R&B crooner, Jaheim, has a confession to make of his own: he wants Usher one-on-one in a Verzuz battle. While the 43-year-old singer does not have an award-winning resume quite like Usher, he also enjoyed his best level of success during the early 2000s, earning multiple platinum albums and several Soul Train Award nominations. So, in a Twitter post dated for this past Sunday, the New Jersey native set his sights on the most prominent soul singer of his era by issuing an open challenge.
"Someone set it up!!! Let's move all the pawns out the way!!!" Jaheim wrote on social media. "King Move but if you are scared I'll just say checkmate!!!! I will give usher 1 month to step up. Nothing personal he's one of the best. RESPECTIVELY."
Although Usher has yet to issue a public response to the challenge, it hasn't stopped the fans of both singers from mocking Jaheim on Twitter for what many of them deemed to be an overly ambitious declaration at best.
