Ever since Roddy Ricch stepped on the scene back in 2018, he's made no bones about his gang affiliation and the way in which it influenced his upbringing as a child living in the projects of Compton, California. The rapper/singer even documented his rags to riches story with songs like "Die Young" and "Ballin." But now that he's on the opposite side of impoverishment, there are those who wish to challenge his authenticity as a true illustration of the Compton streets.
In fact, a Compton Crip by the name of Yah-L recently accused Roddy Ricch of "fake flagging," during a call with a mutual friend on the app known as Clubhouse. When Roddy Ricch got wind of this, he joined the call to defend his reputation and that's when a heated verbal exchange ensued.
"I got phone calls, text messages, I'm seeing on the internet I'm false flagging. I wanna know what's going on," Roddy Ricch said. "You saying I'm not from the hood? Who saying I'm not from the hood? You saying I'm not from the hood?"
As the discussion continued, Yah-L did not sway in his opinion of the Compton rapper. So, Roddy Ricch responded by validating his credibility with personal accounts.
"You ain't see me get put on to Blacc Macc?" the rapper asked. "Three n***as; put two of them down. That ain't official? 'Cause I know a lot of little homies that ain't get their official, n***a."
As the conversation went on, Roddy Ricch turned up the temperature by making things personal, while also explaining to Yah-L exactly why he doesn't have as much time as he used to have to spend in his old stomping grounds.
"You ever touched a million dollars before?" he asked Yah-L. "Do you know what that feel like? 'Cause you here talking about another n***a for free! You thirty, 40 years old using this app; n***a, I'm 23! I don't even know how to use this sh*t. 'Cause I'm over here trying to make the Forbes again this year … Listen, I done made $20 million in a year; you think I'm about to be posted up with you, n***a?!"
Roddy Ricch went on to cite examples of why rappers like himself should not work in their hometown as often as they used to for their own safety.
