Whoopi Goldberg stirred controversy on Monday (January 31) during an episode of The View, where she claimed that the Holocaust was not about race.

Goldberg's comment came during a discussion about a Tennessee school district's recent ban of the Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel Maus, which is about a Holocaust survivor. She stated, "The Holocaust isn’t about race. No, it’s not about race. It's about man’s inhumanity to man."

When Goldberg's co-host Ana Navarro stated, "Well, it’s about white supremacy. That’s what it’s about. It’s about going after Jews and Gypsies," Whoopi further clarified her stance. She responded, "But these are two groups of white people. You’re missing the point. The minute you turn it into race, it goes down this alley. Let’s talk about it for what it is. It’s how people treat each other. It’s a problem. It doesn’t matter if you’re Black or white because Black, white, Jews, Italians, everybody eats each other."

Whoopi was met with backlash online, with some even calling for her to be fired from The View. After speaking to Stephen Colbert about her comments on Monday night, Whoopi took to Twitter to apologize.

She wrote, "On Today’s show, I said the Holocaust 'is not about race, but about man’s inhumanity to man.' I should have said it is about both. As Jonathan Greenblatt from the Anti-Defamation League shared, 'The Holocaust was about the Nazi’s systematic annihilation of the Jewish people — who they deemed to be an inferior race.' I stand corrected. The Jewish people around the world have always had my support and that will never waiver [sic]. I’m sorry for the hurt I have caused." You can read her full apology above.
