The village of Yellow Springs, Ohio voted no on an affordable housing plan after Dave Chappelle threatened to pull millions of dollars in investments if the proposal passed.
Chappelle, who has an office in the area and plans to open a restaurant and comedy club, threatened to "take it all off the table" during a city council meeting.
"I don't know why the village council would be afraid of litigation from a $24 million a year company, while it kicks out a $65 million a year company," Chappelle said. "I cannot believe you would make me audition for you. You look like clowns. I am not bluffing, I will take it all off the table. That's all, thank you."
On Monday, the Yellow Springs City Council voted 2-2 on the proposed development that would have included 64 single-family homes, 52 duplexes, and 24 townhomes. Now that the plan has been scrapped, the area will have 143 single-family homes with a starting price of $300,000.
While the comedian was not the resident opposed to the housing plan, he was reportedly one of the most vocal and threatened to pull his business this past December. Yellow Springs Village Manager Josue Salmeron previously responded to Chappelle's criticism by stating, "Certainly none of what we're doing is in any way or to hurt Dave in any way...I have a responsibility to look out for the interest of the entire community."
