Super Bowl champion Odell Beckham Jr. has suffered his second ACL tear in three years, according to Ian Rapoport from the NFL Network.
The injury occurred during the second quarter of Super Bowl LVI. The 5'11 wide receiver fell to the ground immediately, after dropping a short pass, from Matthew Stafford, over the middle. After the play was blown dead, he stayed on the ground clutching his knee and grimacing in pain. Up until that point in the game, Beckham Jr. led the Rams with 52 receiving yards and a touchdown reception.
Although the Super Bowl MVP award was eventually awarded to his fellow wideout, Cooper Kupp, Beckham Jr. appeared to be the frontrunner for the honor himself until he went down with the injury. Now, with free agency looming ahead, Beckham Jr. must embark on the long road to recovery. His hopes of playing under a multi-year contract going into the 2022 season have diminished significantly along with his chances of recapturing his glory years as a star wideout with the New York Giants.
Nevertheless, the lasting image of the three-time Pro Bowl receiver will be of him shedding tears of joy upon the realization that he was a part of the team that brought the Rams organization its first-ever Super Bowl as a Los Angeles-based team. Hopefully, that image of OBJ on the field will not be the last.
