NBA YoungBoy scored a victory in his federal case, as a judge agreed to suppress video evidence that reportedly showed the rapper with guns.
According to the Advocate, Judge Shelly D. Dick wrote in a 48-page ruling, "When a camera is found at the scene of a suspected possession crime, but it is unknown which of several suspects possessed the contraband, is there probable cause to search the camera for photographic evidence of who possessed the contraband? In this case, the question is narrowed because the post-excision affidavit contains nothing to indicate that the camera contained evidence of crimes."
The judge added, "The mere fact that a camera was recovered at the scene of an arrest does not generate a 'substantial probability' that evidence of a crime will be on that camera. Additionally, without an allegation that the camera was in use when the alleged crimes occurred, the assertion that the camera contained evidence is purely speculative."
YoungBoy's attorneys made the request, as they argued that the SD card featuring the footage was obtained and searched without probable cause by police during an arrest. The Louisiana-born rapper and 15 others were arrested on drug and weapons-related charges in 2020. Among those arrested were Marvin Ramsey, a cameraman who is accused of having the camera in his possession, which contained the SD card.
The footage was reportedly from a video shoot, where YoungBoy and associates were allegedly brandishing weapons in an abandoned lot. Neighbors then alerted authorities to the video shoot, where YoungBoy and others were arrested on drug- and weapons-related charges.
