After nearly sweeping his classic in-ring trilogy against Deontay Wilder, Tyson Fury has reiterated his desire to step away from boxing time and time again. Now, it appears as though the day of reckoning is finally upon the boxing world as the undefeated heavyweight champion recently revealed his plans to hang up his gloves after his upcoming title defense against Dillian Whyte.
“This is the final fight of my career," Fury said. "I’m retiring after this. £150m in the bank—healthy, young—I’m gonna buy a massive yacht abroad. I’m retiring! I’m out. This is my final fight. I’m done.”
The announcement from one of the most quotable athletes in combat sports might be saddening for some, but it should be noted that the list of all-time great boxers to come out of retirement in order to resume their fighting careers includes Evander Holyfield, Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, and the man he was named after -- Mike Tyson. So after his boxing match on April 23rd, there may come a time when the world gets to see the 6'7 ambidextrous fighter dancing around in the ring once again but for now, the "Gypsy King" seems content with walking into the sunset.
