The success of the ‘Verzuz’ series sparked by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland has found many legendary acts going against one another while playing various hits from their catalog. Now, news surfaced noting that the duo will be releasing a documentary produced by Lena Waithe inspired by the Verzuz series.

Per Deadline, the ‘Gifted & Black’ documentary will explore “traditions of Black music to connect, going from the plantation to the Pulitzer Prize.” The documentary will examine how the ‘Verzuz’ series and Black music uplifted and brought people together during the uncertain spaces during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Lena Waithe spoke about her Hillman Grad Production company taking on the task of producing the doc, saying, “Verzuz is more than just two artists going song-for-song. It’s a testament to the power of Black people. It’s the joyful celebration of the legacy that we all needed. With this documentary, we’re excited to take audiences behind the scenes of this global phenomenon while also paying tribute to the artists that shaped us.”

“Verzuz came from our love of culture and our love of music, and the fact that it has become the force it is today is way beyond anything Swizz or I could’ve imagined,” said Timbaland. Stay tuned for more updates.
