According to reports, Wu-Tang Clan producer True Master is suing the NYPD for wrongful imprisonment. The producer claims that police wrongfully treated him and withheld evidence that could have cleared the charges against his name.
The producer, whose real name is Derrick Harris, claims he was falsely accused of rape and had to wait five years to fight the charges. Along with that, Harris says the NYPD went out of their way to falsify evidence that could have expedited his partial acquittal in 2015, along with his 2020 dismissal of the charges.
Harris’ complaint called out the NYPD, the city of New York, the three police officers who investigated Harris, and the New York County district attorney’s office. The complaint also says Harris suffered a brain injury and was denied the chance to get it treated while at Riker’s Island.
The suit points out that officers falsely reported they found Harris’ semen and blood at the crime, which was his apartment. Once he posted bail, the producer was arrested again on a charge of escaping. Because of that, he spent four years at Riker’s Island while awaiting trial, with his charges getting dropped in 2020 after he was acquitted by a grand jury in 2015.
An attorney for Harris--Craig Phemister, said "He lost everything. He had a million-dollar brownstone in Harlem prior to this. He was a successful, award-winning music producer. All gone. The NYPD, the system, must change.”
Since then, attorneys for the producer have created a petition to get the police officers involved fired. Stay tuned for more updates.
