On Tuesday (March 22), Nicki Minaj shared a screenshot from an op-ed on HotNewHipHop titled, "Why Nicki Minaj Is One of the Greatest of All Time," written by Joshua Robinson. The piece pointed to Nicki's influence in the rap game, and Robinson also pointed to other influencers like Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, and City Girls.
Robinson wrote, "Despite the welcomed contributions of women like Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion City Girls, and Doja Cat over the past few years, female rap still feels incomplete without Nicki Minaj’s presence and output, and that alone illustrates how important she is to Hip-Hop, as a genre, and as a culture."
When Nicki shared the screenshot, she scribbled over Cardi, Megan, City Girls, and Doja Cat's names, leading many to question why. Nicki has collaborated with Doja Cat, and she recently cleared up a misunderstanding with the City Girls. However, Nicki and Cardi B have had longstanding tension and beef with one another, which led to a near-fight at New York's fashion week in 2018. There's been rumors of tension between Nicki and Megan after the Houston rapper collaborated with Cardi B on "WAP," which Megan addressed in a 2020 New York Times op-ed.
Megan wrote, "In every industry, women are pitted against one another, but especially in hip-hop, where it seems as if the male-dominated ecosystem can handle only one female rapper at a time. Countless times, people have tried to pit me against Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, two incredible entertainers and strong women. I'm not 'the new' anyone; we are all unique in our own ways."
