Will Smith's mother, Carolyn Smith, spoke out in light of her son making headlines for slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars on Sunday (March 27).

Speaking exclusively with WPVI-TV Philadelphia, Carolyn stated, "He is a very even, people person. That's the first time I've ever seen him go off. The first time in his lifetime. I've never seen him do that."

Will issued an apology to Chris Rock on Monday evening in a statement, "Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive," he wrote. "My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally."

Will added, "I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness."
