Twenty people were massacred during a blood-filled shootout at a cockfighting event in the Las Tranjas region of Mexico. The shocking incident occurred shortly after numerous spectators were on hand to watch a legal display of animal combat. Amongst the victims were a pair of American siblings named Arleth and Melissa Silva. The latter was a mother of four at the time of the fatal shooting, while her 16-year-old sister remains in critical condition, having been shot once in the lungs and twice in the legs.
The aftermath of the killings is quite gruesome, but what's even more horrific was the way in which the shooters pre-planned the execution of their victims. Apparently, the killers arrived on the scene in a stolen food truck, decked out in tactical gear, fully prepared to do severe damage.
“The snack food company truck arrived, and several armed people in camouflage clothing got out,” a prosecutor's statement said. “At the same moment, a bus that was outside the building was used as a blockade [in order to prevent victims from escaping]."
Following the tragic incident, Mexico’s president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, placed the blame on the area's local gangs before vowing to retaliate in accordance with the law.
As of now, Arleth Silvia is barely holding on to her life under the care of a hospital. In wake of the devastation, the teenager's family and friends have set up a GoFundMe page to help support her financially. So far the campaign has raised over $15,800.
